πŸ” if you're going to use M.b's Timeline, make sure these people fill it

The magic of Micro.blog

I see M.b as a mothership for content-creation: centered around written, personal posts.

My Micro.Camp 2021 talk laid out the 3-pronged value prop of M.b:

  1. publish blog content
  2. syndicate to socials & newsletter
  3. community commenting

Now I must say, 3 has been surprisingly awesome, and probably generates more engagement than 2: both in quality (no surprise from paid, curated network) and quantity (if you go and comment on tohers). And it’s not just about my posts: I check Mentions daily and trawl the Discover page a few times / week to engage with the awesome humans here, commenting to the extent that my Comments recently passed-up my Post count.
But my main goal is to post (including a Microcast pretty soon). 3 is getting in the way of goal number 1. I like being able to open to M.b app and quickly make a micro post, but I find that opening onto a Timeline busy with Micro posts inevitably distracts me from that goal.

I’ve recently requested these 2 UX features which would help: a) customize starting page on native apps to New Post and b) the ability to subscribe just to Article length post titles.
But I don’t believe Manton plans on either anytime soon.

So until then, unfortunately I’m gonna have to unfollow these brilliant accounts here on M.b to give me a blank* welcome screen to hopefully encourage me to hit Cmd-N and work on posting more meaningful Articles. I’ve organised into my three categories those who are actively posting primarily in each area, with special mentions of folks I feel I’ve connected most with (including IRL) at the top. But they are all awesome and follow-worthy (obv)!

* turns out you can’t escape having your own posts reflecting back at you (another UX tweak Manton should consider):

Who to Follow

Arts

Jasraj Hothi @jasraj (if you wanna get inspired to write. 1st person met IRL from here and still friends & collaborators)

Abhishek Pandit @punnedit (if he ever gets round to using my gifted year, he won’t just be an IRL friend & collaborator!)

Holly Honeychurch @hollyhoneychurch (if you wanna get inspired to compose)

Martin Feld @MartinFeld (didn’t Timeline follow, but he’s a brilliant podcaster)

JamJam @jamjam

Alexandru Dutulescu @alexandru

Rosie Sherry @rosiesherry

Adora Williams @adorawilliams

Brian Schrader @sonicrocketman (socially-conscious programmer who writes cracking songs too. Hope to meet in SoCal)

Colin Devroe @cdevroe (the 1st person who mentioned me here. Focus on succinct Articles)

Chris Aldrich @chrisaldrich (following Chris will make you a better Indie Webber but won’t make your feed minimalist)

Manton Reece @manton (posts waayy less about cats than Eugen @ Mastodon, and doesn’t make you opt-out)

Aaron Parecki @aaronpk (I know M.b isn’t about clout, but if you do wanna follow probably it’s most high-profile individual, he’s recently turned his attention to educating us on the most important modern skill ie video-production. Don’t remember Kylie doing that)

Going Forward

I’ll be keeping a special eye out for y’all on the Discover page (the best human-curated feed on the web which I’ll visit weekly) and if any of y’all use the monthly mail-list digest, comment here and I’ll sub that way (preferably just Articles like mine)!
I’m also prototyping a tool called OURSS which I hope will allow indie creators to showcase awesome individuals whose content they follow online in a platform-agnostic way, which I hope to cross-pollinate with the M.b community.
More importantly, I hope to get the chance to interact in richer environments, such as IndieWebCamp and hopefully Micro.Camp gets more IRL too.

Until then M.b:
